Raising children reminds you how fun play can be—but what if you didn’t have to outgrow it? Discover ways to bring childlike joy back into your life.

One of the greatest gifts of raising children is the opportunity it gives you to experience childhood again. You most likely don’t remember taking your first steps, but you get to watch your child go from crawling to walking to running. Your first day of kindergarten might be a little fuzzy, but you’ll remember what it was like to walk your child into their first day of school. This time, you’re the one responsible for them—which is less fun. But on the days when you’re present, being a parent gives you the opportunity to play. It’s great to connect with your children in this way, on their level. But it’s important that we incorporate play in our lives whether we’re with our children or not.

Check out the ways to bring more play into your life—you can decide if you want the little ones to tag along or not.

Coloring
While you’re trying to teach your little ones to color in the lines—or not—take the time to reignite your love for coloring as well. As a child, you might have been trying to concentrate; it may have been a little stressful before you got a handle on it. Now, as an adult, coloring is relaxing. You watch as your efforts help craft something beautiful.

Slide Park
Slides aren’t just for the children. Beyond the slides on the playground, there are entire facilities dedicated to slides for children and adults. You’ll feel just like the child that’s still living within you when you hit those safe slopes.

Puzzles
Once your kids get to an age where they won’t scatter your pieces—or if you have a table they can’t reach—you might want to try puzzling. Like coloring, you can daydream, listen to a podcast, have a glass of wine, and feel a sense of accomplishment once it’s all over.

Collage Making
Are you creative but don’t necessarily have a specific medium of expression? Test your hand at collage making. Pull out those old magazines—or buy a stack at Half Price Books—grab the good scissors, and get to cutting. Whether you’re creating your dream life or just making art, you’ll be better off for taking the time to make something memorable.

Game Night
In these times, we need community more than ever before. Invite the homies over. Have everyone bring snacks. Get the drinks flowing and pull out the games—Spades, Uno, Taboo, etc. You don’t have to wait for the cookout or the holidays to kick it with your friends. Everyone’s competitive spirit will come out. The conversations get good. And the laughter reminds you of the importance of not only friends but play as well.

“Nothing compares to the soul ties I share with my girls,” said the 35-year-old media maven. With 15-years experience in media, talent relations, and event production, she knows about overcoming obstacles with a smile. “For the first time in a long time, I’m reflecting on the balance between the anxiety of motherhood and my passion for the spaces I loved before becoming a mom. “Every day, I continue learning how to be a great mom while showing up in the spaces that matter most. I’m grateful for the life I’ve built—balancing marriage, motherhood to Tristyn (5) and Naima (2), entrepreneurship, and public speaking in the collegiate space. It’s not always easy, but it’s always worth it.”

Like most mothers, around this time, Christina is gearing up for Spring Break, which means she’ll have to pull off a balancing act with her two kids home. The exuberant mom is going to it joyfully. “We’re starting Spring Break with an exciting milestone for our big girl, Tristyn,” she beamed.

“As a family, we run an online children’s book club and are passionate advocates for reading. My husband and I have been homeschooling her using Hooked on Phonics (not an ad, just a shoutout—it really helped!). Now, she’s getting ready for her first-ever public reading at the Children’s Book Festival at the Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia—a huge moment for us.”

So how does she plan on keeping the learning going all week? Tapping into her own Spring Break memories, she recalled a trip to the Grand Canyon that changed her life. “That trip also sparked my love for landscape photography after witnessing the breathtaking views of the Grand Canyon (I still have the pics!)”

“Beyond the festival, we’re keeping traditions alive with fun activities inspired by my mom and aunties,” she said. Some examples of activities she plans with her children are: Egg Dyeing: A childhood favorite! Eggs are pricey these days, so I found this fun alternative we might try (or mix with the real thing): Egg Decorating Hack. An Easter Egg Scavenger Hunt, story time at Barnes & Noble or local bookstores, the Children’s Museum and outdoor fun!

And she’s all about creating meaningful learning memories. “For example, instead of just visiting the zoo, we’ll grab a few books from our local library to learn about specific animals beforehand. That way, when we visit, we can spend extra time observing those animals.”

So how does this media mom manage to balance it all? A strong self-care routine. “I’m a huge advocate for daily self-care—it’s the only way I can show up as the best mom for my girls. Thankfully, being a girl mom means sometimes bringing them along for my self-care dates!”
