More Than a Gift: Honoring Fathers in Ways They’ll Never Forget

Father’s Day often gets a bad rap for being reduced to typical gifts like bow ties, grills or socks

Father’s Day often gets a bad rap for being reduced to typical gifts like bow ties, grills or socks. Dads sometimes get the shorter end of the stick when it comes to celebrating their contributions for their families. Historically, in our culture Fathers were pushed out of the households and portrayed to be the lesser homemaker or contributor in the day to day parenting dynamics. The truth is, without the Father figure in a household the children and the mothers both suffer in more ways than one. A Father’s presence is capable of doing so much more than just providing financially for their households.

My Father’s presence was an emotional anchor in our household when I was growing up. His steady gaze and even tone settled my pre-teen emotional spirals in ways I rarely experience in my adult relationships today. My Father is intellectual and compassionate in such a strong way. I’ve learned so many things from him and about myself, through studying him over the years. Now, as an adult and parent myself, I can relate even more to him in many ways.

Father’s Day is an opportunity to celebrate generational wisdom and family leadership within our households. Often times, simple acts of acknowledgement and appreciation stretch a lot further than material gifts for Father’s. The gift of being seen is worth more than anything.

Why Presence Often Matters More Than Presents

The chances are, if you’re heading into your local grocery store or supermarket any time in the next few days, you’re sure to be bombarded with plenty of golfing trinkets, football shaped mugs, bow tie themed gifts and more to purchase for the father figure in your household. If you’re stopped in your tracks about where to start this year, a good reflection question could be, “what will he actually remember about this holiday 5-6 years from now?”

I could imagine my husband remembering our kids cooking him a homemade breakfast and delivering the cards they so passionately picked out for him on their own. The smiles and pride our 3-year old son has in his heart when he knocks on the door and shouts, “Happy Fadders Day Dad!” first thing in the morning.

Or the joy on our 13 year old’s face as she hosts our first annual ‘Ice Cream Taste Test’ for him with all his favorite flavors.

The little things can truly make a big impact on Father’s Day this year. Think of experiences your family can have that communicate something many fathers rarely hear enough: “You matter to us.”

In a culture that often equates love with spending, Father’s Day offers an opportunity to celebrate something far more valuable: presence. The conversations, traditions, and shared experiences families create today may become the memories fathers treasure most tomorrow.

And unlike many gifts, those memories continue giving long after the day is over.

The Greatest Gift Is Knowing You Matter

I think a core theme of celebrating individuals in our families, whether it be birthdays or Father’s Day, is to think about what would make that individual feel seen, valued and respected as a part of our family?

I have a challenge for you this Father’s Day. Spend one intentional hour with a father or father figure this month and ask them a question they’ve never asked before. See what you learn and enjoy the moment.
